Boarding and alighting Once the reservation is completed, information on the reserved train will appear on the top screen of the “JR Kyushu” application. Tap the “Prepare to board (QR display/read)” button, and a QR code will appear on the screen. What is interesting about JR Kyushu’s QR ticketless service is that once purchased, passengers can switch between “QR” and “paper tickets” before entering the train. This means that you can switch from a paper ticket to a QR ticket when you go to the station because there is a long queue. Now, let’s actually use the system. I purchased a ticket for the “Sonic” limited express train between Kokura and Oita, but in fact, my itinerary at that time started from Shin-Tosu and consisted of Shin-Tosu – Tosu – Hakata – Kokura – Oita. The “Kyushu Net Ticket” that I purchased includes a train ticket and a limited express ticket in one set, so I could travel between Kokura and Oita with this ticket. I used Mobile Suica to travel between Shin-Tosu and Kokura, which is out of the ticketed area. In this case, there is a problem when transferring from a regular train on the Kagoshima Main Line to the “Sonic” at Kokura Station. First of all, the Mobile Suica train did not process the entry, and the QR Ticketless train did not keep a record of the entry. Whether it is the Mobile Suica that has not been processed, or the QR Ticketless that has not been recorded, an error will occur at the automatic ticket gate (the same thing will happen with a paper ticket). If I had only used the QR Ticketless ticket, I would not have had to go through this trouble. After passing through the ticket gate, the display was still in the “before entry” state, which caused me to panic, but this can be changed by tapping the “refresh” arrow. After entering, just to be sure, let’s refresh the display to see if it has changed to “Entered” or not. The same goes for when you exit at the destination, which is also changed to “Exited”.
Note that the configuration of ticket gates differs from station to station. It would be easy if all stations had automatic ticket gates compatible with QR Ticketless, but small stations may only have simple ticket gates for SUGOCA, or not even that. Therefore, with JR Kyushu’s QR Chikeles, station ticket gates could be made in four patterns as follows. First, a form in which a reader for QR Ticketless is added to an existing automatic ticket gate. Major stations in urban areas are in this configuration. It is easy to talk about this, and the QR code can be read by the reader of the automatic ticket checker. Note that QR-tickeless automatic ticket checkers are limited to certain corridors. Next, the existing automatic ticket checker is left as it is, and an independent simple ticket checker for QR-tickeless is installed separately. The simple ticket checker is installed outside the rachi for entry and inside the rachi for exit. If the station is manned, the simple ticket checker reads the QR code, processes the entry and exit, and then the passenger shows the screen to the station attendant and passes through. Next, a simplified ticket checker for QR-tickeless tickets is added to a station that does not have a regular automatic ticket checker but has a simplified ticket checker for SUGOCA tickets. In this case, a simple ticket checker is also used. The last is a “poster ticket checker” used when there is no simple ticket checker for QR-tickeless or it is not in operation. QR codes for entry and exit processing are posted near the ticket gate. Of course, there are separate ones for entry and exit. The station where the aforementioned simple ticket checker is installed also has a QR code for the poster ticket checker. When the QR code is displayed on the “JR Kyushu” application, “Poster ticket gate” is shown in the lower right corner. Tap the QR code, then use your smartphone’s camera to read the QR code for entry/exit processing at the station. Because of this, the operation of entering and exiting the station differs from station to station. While this is fine for stations that are used on a daily basis, when visiting a station for the first time, it is necessary to check which of the four patterns applies and perform the operations accordingly. In particular, the “poster ticket gate” requires an additional operation, which may be a little confusing. However, it would cost too much to install normal-type automatic ticket checkers at all stations, so there is nothing we can do about it.
