The purpose of this trip to Macau is to enjoy various tourist elements such as famous sites, attractive hotels, and food, but I also want to dig a little deeper into the cultural aspects of the city.
So I went to a recommended spot where you can experience Macau’s special cuisine with the chef (advance reservation required).
Macau was a Portuguese colony from 1557 to 1999. The influence of this was so great that a special fusion of cultures was established in Portugal and China. Therefore, Macanese cuisine is a combination of Chinese and Western cuisines that has taken root in Macau for more than 400 years.
Under the chef’s careful guidance, the chef himself will cook a sample at first. During the cooking, the chef entertains the participants with humor about the culture and history of Macau. After that, we were divided into two groups to start the actual cooking experience. Two dishes were prepared: “Portuguese Chicken” with stewed chicken and potatoes, and “Octopus Salad” with octopus cooked in a rice cooker. Combined with the atmosphere of the Portuguese-style building, the tasting experience was different from the Macanese cuisine that one would simply enjoy at a restaurant.
