First place went to Hamazen Ryokan, an inn with a half-open-air bath in every room, for the second year in a row. The inn draws hot water from a slightly alkaline chloride spring whose main components are sodium and calcium, which are said to be characterized by the quality of the spring water that does not easily cool down. All guest rooms are equipped with a half-open-air bath with 24-hour free-flowing spring water, and each room has various bathtubs with different themes, such as hinoki cypress and marble.
In second place is Hotel Kigure in Ikaho Onsen. The hotel uses “golden hot water,” a neutral sulfate spring rich in iron, one of the many qualities found in Ikaho Onsen. Surrounded by greenery, the hotel has a large “Senraku” bathhouse with 11 different bathtubs, including an open-air bath, a reclining bath, and a one-meter-deep standing bath. In addition, “Sengaku” has a bath with a view of the mountains of Jyoshu, a bathtub with a massage function, and a sauna that is equipped with an automatic wax-lauryu system, making a total of 26 types of bathtubs available for enjoyment.
In third place is Tsukioka Onsen Mashu. Tsukioka Onsen is a slightly alkaline sulfur spring with high hydrogen sulfide ion content and a clear emerald green water color. 4 open-air baths and a private bath available only by reservation provide 100% hot spring water from a slightly thickened source. The open-air baths are surrounded by a Japanese garden, where visitors can bathe while enjoying seasonal views of flowers, autumn leaves, and snow.
