JICA President Akihiko Tanaka visited Beijing, China, from October 22 to 24, meeting with officials of Chinese government agencies, participating in the 40th anniversary ceremony of the China-Japan Friendship Clinic, and giving a lecture at Peking University.
During the meeting with Mr. Chen Jiachang, Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr. Chen introduced the long history of cooperation between the Ministry and JICA, and President Tanaka expressed his hope that the human networks formed through past cooperation between Japan and China will continue to be utilized in the future.

During the meeting with Chief Luo Zhaohui of the State Administration for International Development Cooperation, Chief Luo explained China’s foreign aid efforts and challenges, and President Tanaka spoke about the importance of mutual understanding and information sharing between the two organizations.

He also visited the China-Japan Friendship Hospital, which was established with Japanese cooperation, and participated in the 40th anniversary ceremony. At the ceremony, President Tanaka congratulated the hospital on its development into a leading general hospital in China through the efforts of both Japanese and Chinese officials since its opening in 1984, and expressed his hope that the hospital will continue to grow as an institution that contributes to the advancement of healthcare in China and the world.

They also visited the Japan-China Friendship Center for Environmental Conservation, also established with Japanese cooperation, and met with the center’s head, Chen Ming. During the meeting, Director Chen explained the Center’s current activities at various levels, including exchanges with government, researchers, and businesses, and President Tanaka noted the importance of exchanges and mutual learning between Japanese and Chinese officials regarding environmental conservation in China through the Center’s activities.

Furthermore, Chancellor Tanaka gave a lecture titled “The World under Complex Crises and the 70th Anniversary of Japan’s International Cooperation” at Peking University. The lecture was attended by about 50 Chinese students, young researchers, and international students. Participants asked questions on development issues that should be addressed as a priority and on human security, and a lively discussion ensued.

This year also marked the 45th anniversary of the start of Japan-China economic cooperation in 1979, and to commemorate this event, we participated in a panel exhibition looking back on Japan-China economic cooperation to date and had the opportunity to interact with Chinese officials.
