JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing regional revitalization initiatives (currently the “JAL Furusato Project”), and in August 2020 launched the “JAL Furusato Ambassadors,” cabin crew members selected through an in-house recruitment process who move to the area to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, JAL appointed “JAL Hometown Cheering Troops” who are involved in regional revitalization while serving on board. The aim is to develop products and solve regional issues for hometowns and other regions with which they have connections, utilizing the knowledge they have accumulated as flight attendants.
We spoke with Yoshiko Nagata, a JAL Furusato Ambassador who is involved in Minamiaso Railway tours in Kumamoto.
–What can you tell us about your initiatives?
Hello, this is Nagata, JAL Furusato Ambassador for Kumamoto Prefecture.
In July 2023, the Minami Aso Railway resumed operation on its entire line for the first time in seven years after the Kumamoto earthquake. To commemorate the “first anniversary of the resumption of full line operation,” we have planned a tour to enjoy Minami Aso to the fullest.
We welcomed everyone in the historic and liberating train car, which was converted from a freight train from the Japan National Railways era about 50 years ago, and enjoyed the magnificent nature of Minami Aso seen from the train window.
–How are you involved in this effort?
Cabin attendants from JAL, JR Kyushu, and Minami Aso Railway made special announcements about the Minami Aso Railway Trolley Train from Takamori Station to Tateno Station. As an ambassador, I also made announcements with trivia to liven things up.
JAL’s original drink “Sky Time” was also served as a welcome drink, which was very well received by the attendees.
In this tour, the coaches used for SL Hitoyoshi, a locomotive that has been running in Kyushu for more than 100 years, were specially revived for this tour. Special announcements and original quiz competitions were also held on the train to provide an enjoyable experience.
–What are your future plans and prospects?
Kumamoto has a lot of attractive nature, vehicles, and food.
We would like to work to further enliven Kumamoto.
–What is your message to travelers?
The scenery seen from the trolley train varies from season to season. In the coming season, you can see beautiful autumn leaves.
The announcements vary from guide to guide, so why not find your favorite crew member?
SL Hitoyoshi, which regrettably retired in March 2024, also began exhibiting steam locomotive (SL) “58654,” manufactured in 1922, at Hitoyoshi Station in Kumamoto Prefecture this month.
Please come visit us in Kumamoto. I’ll be waiting for you!
