JR Group will end the sale of round-trip tickets and continuous tickets at JR companies in March 2026. After the end of sales, tickets that are still valid may be used until the expiration of their validity period.
The reason is that the number of round-trip tickets and consecutive tickets on sale has decreased due to the nationwide expansion of transportation IC cards and other services, and the fact that many users are now using services that allow them to make reservations online at the time of boarding.
After the end of sales, passengers will need to purchase two one-way tickets when using the service for a round-trip or consecutive itinerary. In addition, the reserved-seat ticket vending machine is being considered so that return tickets can be purchased with almost the same operation as at present.
With the end of round-trip ticket sales, the round-trip discount, which offers one discount for each outbound and return trip of 601 km or more each way, will also no longer be offered.
Discount certificates, such as student discounts, and some special products (e.g., Zipangu Club) will also be handled differently in the future. Details will be announced on each company’s website as soon as they are finalized.
