It is said that these skills became established as traditional crafts, giving birth to the work of wood molds and models, which became the foundation of Shizuoka City’s plastic model industry. It is surprising that the history goes back to the Edo period, isn’t it? What interested me in what I heard was BANDAI SPIRITS’ educational initiative “Gunpla Academia”. Since its launch in 2021, about 670,000 children have participated in the “Gunpla Academia” plastic model classes. In January 2025, construction of a new three-story factory is scheduled to be completed next to the current Bandai Hobby Center, and it has been announced that the new factory will begin operation around summer. I had always wanted to visit the Keisuke Serizawa Museum of Art. This museum houses the works of Keisuke Serizawa, a dye craftsman born in the Meiji period (1868-1912), and his collection of crafts from Japan and around the world. Even if you are not familiar with Keisuke Serizawa’s name, you may have seen one of his representative works, the “stencil-dyed calendar,” at least once. Keisuke Serizawa’s works are full of pop, bright, and elegant patterns that depict various motifs such as letters, plants, and landscapes. The museum holds exhibitions four times a year, focusing on different themes. The contents of the exhibitions are said to change drastically, and some of my friends are big fans of Keisuke Serizawa, who always visit the museum for each of the four special exhibitions. The next exhibition is “Keisuke Serizawa’s Collection in Japan,” which opens on January 4.
