Grant Aid Agreement Signed for Pakistan: Contributing to Flood Risk Reduction by Strengthening River Management Systems | News & PR

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan on December 17 in Islamabad, the capital of the country, for the “Strengthening Flood Management in the Indus River Basin.

Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Punjab, Balochistan, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Abbottabad, Manserah, Haripur and other parts of the Indus River Basin and tributaries)

Business Objectives

This project aims to improve the quantity and quality of basic data required for future river maintenance and to improve the strength of riverbank facilities against flash floods by improving hydrological, hydraulic and meteorological observation equipment and data monitoring systems, and by repairing and reinforcing river structures, etc. in the Indus River and its tributaries, thereby contributing to flood risk reduction through infrastructure development. This will contribute to flood risk reduction through infrastructure development.

Business

(a) Details of facilities, equipment, etc.

Facilities] Central data management center (2 locations), repair and reinforcement of river structures (total length: approx. 1,500 m)

Equipment] Water level and rainfall observation equipment (46 units), stream gauges (6 units), automatic weather observation equipment (5 units), data display system (12 units)

(b) Consulting Services/Software Component Description: Detailed design, bidding assistance, procurement supervision, and technical assistance for data format conversion for relocation and utilization of hydrologic and hydraulic observation equipment, meteorological observation equipment, and data monitoring systems as software components.

Maximum Amount of Provision

Estimated amount of cooperation (Japanese side): 2,831 million yen

Scheduled implementation period

42 months (including detailed design and bidding period)

The project is considered to be completed when the facilities are provided.
