JR West, JR Tokai, and JR Kyushu will introduce mobile IC services with JR Tokai’s TOICA in spring 2026 or later and JR Kyushu’s SUGOCA in spring 2027 or later, utilizing the JR West “Mobile ICOCA” system.
This will allow commuter passes for the JR Tokai and JR Kyushu areas to be used with mobile ICOCA, eliminating the need to wait in line at stations when purchasing commuter passes.
Mobile ICOCA service was launched on March 22, 2023, and the number of users exceeded 2.7 million at the end of February 2025.
Currently, it provides services such as balance recharging, passing through ticket gates, purchasing ICOCA area commuter passes, and making payments at stores. In the future, in addition to TOICA and SUGOCA area commuting pass, JR Kyushu’s web membership services (such as JR Qupo) will also be supported.
As for commuter passes, previously only card-type and magnetic commuter passes were covered, but the service has now been expanded to include mobile ICOCA.
Commuter pass for junior high and high school students will be available from March 15 (already announced), Shinkansen commuter pass “FREX/FREX Pal” will be available from spring 2026, and commuter pass including stations and sections outside IC area will be available from spring 2027.
