The 4.8 km long railroad bridge is the longest railroad bridge in Bangladesh. The Jamuna River is said to be one of the world’s most flood-prone rivers. The bridge is characterized by a large difference in water levels between the rainy and dry seasons, and flooding occurs every year. With an eye to the future sustainability of the bridge and reduction of maintenance costs, cutting-edge Japanese technology was adopted.
The bridge will serve as a new gateway between the capital city of Dhaka and the northwestern region of Bangladesh, and is expected to improve the efficiency of railroad transportation that supports Bangladesh’s economic development, as well as connectivity within the country and with neighboring countries, including India.
