Izuru will open RITA Izumifumoto Miyaji-tei, a samurai residence hotel in Izumi City, Kagoshima Prefecture, on June 30, 2012, in a renovated 120-year-old former Miyaji-tei building.
“Izumifumoto” is the largest group of samurai residences of the Satsuma clan. The vacant samurai residences will be revitalized and utilized to attract visitors from within and outside of the prefecture. The hotel has three rooms per building, and all of the three elements that make up the traditional samurai residences of the Izumi-Foothills, the main house, the storehouse, and the fields, are still in existence. From the porch, visitors can look out over the karesansui (dry landscape) garden, said to be the oldest in the Satsuma clan.
Each couple staying at the hotel will receive a special “RITA Sorakyu” ochoko. Masanori Shiro, a ceramic artist living in Miyama, Hioki-shi, Kagoshima, handcrafts each piece using the traditional white Satsuma technique.
