Sewage Treatment System Developed with Yen Loan in Brazil Begins Operation: Contributing to Improvement of Local Livelihoods and Sanitation and Preservation of the Natural Environment | News & PR

On March 17, a ceremony was held in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, in the southern part of the Federative Republic of Brazil, to commemorate the start of operation of a sewage treatment plant developed through JICA’s yen loan project. The ceremony was attended by the Governor of the State of Santa Catarina, Mr. Jorginho Melo, the Mayor of Florianópolis, Mr. Topazio Neto, and other project officials from implementing agencies.

Sewage treatment plant in operation

Santa Catarina is one of the most economically and socially developed states in Brazil. The state’s rich natural environment is a resource that attracts many domestic and international tourists. On the other hand, the population shift from inland to coastal areas and the increase in the number of tourists visiting coastal cities have resulted in the deterioration of water quality in rivers and seawater, which has delayed the development of sewage treatment facilities and affected the natural environment and the public health of local residents.

The project was initiated with the aim of improving the environmental and sanitary conditions in Santa Catarina by constructing and expanding five sewage treatment systems in Florianópolis, the capital of the coastal region of Santa Catarina, and two other cities in the state, thereby promoting the spread of sewage systems in the state. JICA has provided a yen loan totaling approximately 14.4 billion yen to the Santa Catarina Water and Sewerage Authority (Companhia Catarinense de Águas e Saneamento-CASAN) to support the construction of treatment systems, including sewage treatment plants, pumping stations, and sewage pipelines. This project is expected to increase the sewerage system penetration rate in the project area from 7% to 64%, and is expected to contribute to the improvement of the living environment of local residents and the protection of nature.

With the start of operations, four of the five planned treatment systems are now operational. At the ceremony, CASAN President Edison Morris expressed his gratitude for JICA’s longstanding support, and Director Miyazaki expressed his pleasure at JICA’s contribution to improving the environment and public health in Santa Catarina. The expansion of the sewage treatment plant is underway, and we will continue to work with CASAN, the implementing agency, to ensure steady progress and completion of the project.
