Posted on 2025-04-152025-05-17 by Editor in Chief

[Saturday, June 28, 2025 – Sunday, July 6, 2025] Call for Participation!

(Application deadline: Friday, April 11, 2025 (1st round), Friday, May 30, 2025 (2nd round))

*If the number of participants does not reach the maximum number by the first application deadline, a second deadline will be set.

We will conduct the “Tanzania Study Tour (Agriculture Sector)” for Japanese companies to experience the current status of agriculture and agricultural mechanization in Tanzania, mainly in the rice sector.

Since we meet and disband locally, participants can come not only from Japan but also from bases in neighboring countries.

[You can do things like this.

You can get a sense of the potential of Tanzania’s agricultural sector by seeing it in action.

The program also includes visits to farmers’ organizations that earn income from agriculture-related businesses (rice mill operations, farm labor contracting, etc.) to hear firsthand accounts of how they operate their businesses.

You can visit the largest international trade fair in East Africa (Saba Saba) and directly search for potential local partners.

Networking opportunities are available through meetings with government agencies and JICA offices.

Background and Objectives

  1. background

Agriculture is one of the major industries in Tanzania, accounting for 24.3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2022 (about 1/4 of GDP), and 64.3% of the population is employed in agriculture (in 2021). In 2021, the country produced 7.04 million tons of maize, 6.13 million tons of cassava, 4.99 million tons of sweet potatoes, 3.59 million tons of bananas, 3.52 million tons of sugarcane, and 2.69 million tons of rice (unhulled), ranking third in the world for sweet potato production and fifth for cashew production (210,000 tons). The country boasts the world’s third largest sweet potato production and fifth largest cashew production (210,000 tons).

Rice is the second major grain in Tanzania after maize, and its production jumped from 890,000 tons per year to 2.28 million tons (white rice equivalent) between 2009 and 2018, making it the second largest rice producer in SSA after Nigeria and Madagascar. Tanzania has already met its domestic demand and is a major rice exporter to the East African region, with exports of rice (unhulled) and white rice valued at USD 319.9 million and USD 280.39 million, respectively, in 2021, making it the largest export value of any Tanzanian agricultural commodity.

Tanzania has a land area of 945,000 square kilometers, approximately 2.5 times the size of Japan, and its population of 67.58 million in 2024 is estimated to grow to 138.97 million in 2054 and 261.69 million in 2100. 1 Tanzania has a thriving agricultural industry and has great potential to expand its domestic market, but the physical distance from Japan has limited the number of Japanese companies entering the country. In terms of the number of Japanese companies operating overseas, China has 31,324 offices, Thailand, India, and Vietnam have 5,856, 4,901, and 2,373 offices, respectively, and while East Asia, Southeast Asia, and South Asia have many offices, Tanzania has only 48 offices2 .

Therefore, we have decided to conduct a Tanzania study tour (in the agricultural sector) with the aim of first getting a feel for the country and exploring its business potential.

  1. purpose

1 . To help Japanese companies to enter Tanzania by informing a wide range of Japanese companies about the current status of agriculture and agricultural mechanization in Tanzania, mainly in the rice sector, and by exchanging information with local officials.
