Torijyu,” a popular menu item at Toridei, whose main restaurant is located in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, has been popular since its establishment, and is so well known in Gunma Prefecture that it is called the soul food of the people of Gunma. The “Tori-Meshi Bento” is a take-out version of the Tori-jyu. It is usually sold at Toridei’s stores, but it is also sold as an ekiben at the Maebashi Station kiosk, so I actually picked one up this time.
Two types of bento are available at Maebashi Station: the 800 yen “Torimeshi Take Bento” and the 950 yen “Torimeshi Matsu Bento,” and I chose the Torimeshi Matsu Bento.
When you take off the lid, you are greeted with a huge platter of chicken meat spread over almost the entire surface. There are two kinds of chicken meat on the plate, one is a thin slice of chicken breast, and the other is a large cut of chicken thigh. Both are shiny and look very tasty.
At first, I felt that the thinly sliced meat had little impact, as it tasted lighter than it looked when eaten as is, perhaps because it was sliced so thinly. However, this impression changes drastically when eaten with the rice that is placed under the meat.
The rice is topped with more of Torihei’s signature sauce. This sauce is quite rich in flavor, but it gives a strong richness to the light meat and brings out the flavor at once. The taste is incomparable to eating the meat by itself, and is a taste that will linger in your mouth for a long time.
Next is the thigh. Unlike the mune meat, the meat itself is coated with sauce. It has a flavor similar to that of yakitori, with a savory taste as if roasted over an open flame. The meat itself has a rich flavor, so it is quite tasty on its own. It is also thickly cut, so it is chewy. The flavor of the meat fills your mouth with every bite. Of course, it goes perfectly with rice soaked in sauce.
Being a boxed lunch, it was cold, but it was still satisfyingly delicious, and I can see why it is so popular. This chicken rice bento seems to be quite popular at the store in Maebashi Station, and even though it arrives twice a day, it seems to sell out quickly. Therefore, it is recommended to make a reservation in advance or ask the kiosk to reserve it for you.
