Since its appearance in 2011, “Piyorin” has been very popular for its adorable appearance. It seems to have become a well-known souvenir from Nagoya Station.
An ekiben featuring Piyorin is sold at Nagoya Station. It is the “Piyorin bento boxed lunch box full of Nagoya specialties. The Piyorin bento has been renewed several times, and as of May 2025, the third version is on sale.
There is a hole in the center of the package, under which a cute egg-and-rice dish with a soboro sauce peeks out in the shape of Piyorin.
The ekiben is made up of rice with a minced egg in the shape of a piyorin, surrounded by Nagoya’s famous side dishes.
First, the rice with a soft-boiled egg in the center is made with eggs from Nagoya Cochin, a well-known local chicken breed in Aichi Prefecture. The rice is cooked in chicken broth and covered with a thick layer of the minced egg, with tapioca and cheese to give it a piyorin face. The egg shavings are quite sweet in flavor, giving the impression of a sweet treat.
On the top left side of the rice with egg and soboro, there is miso katsu on a skewer and fried prawns, which is a must for Nagoya. The miso sauce for the miso katsu is served separately, so you can enjoy it not only on the miso katsu but also on the fried prawns.
In the upper right corner is the original Ankake Kishimen, another Nagoya specialty, made by mixing Kishimen noodles with Ankake spaghetti sauce. The texture is different from that of spaghetti, but the spicy flavor of ankake spaghetti can be enjoyed, and this is what it is supposed to be.
The bottom right is tenmusu with shrimp tempura in between. The combination of the rich shrimp tempura and the light salted musubi gives the impression of a relatively mature taste.
In the lower left corner are the three sacred items essential to an ekiben: omelet, kamaboko, and saba (grilled mackerel). Personally, I would have liked to have filled this area with Nagoya specialties as well, but I am sure that the presence of the standard elements of a makunouchi bento enhances its ekiben-like character. And it can be said that this side dish makes this an ekiben that both parents and children can enjoy together.
The Piyorin Bento, full of Nagoya specialties, is limited to 100 servings per day. It is often sold out before noon, so if you want to get your hands on one, we recommend that you get to Nagoya Station as soon as possible.
