Eizan Electric Railway to Introduce Renewed “Mai” Train by the end of this year. The train will also be in the “100 Series” format to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of service.

Eizan Railway (Eizan Dentetsu) will introduce a sightseeing train, “Mai” (Mai), by the end of 2025.

Car No. 721 and No. 724, which were the last unrenovated cars of the Series 700 trains, were renovated. The renewal train will have a two-car formation, and its name will be changed to “Series 100” to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Eizan Railway’s opening.

The nickname was chosen in the hope that visitors would travel as if they were “dancing” in kimonos. The title (logo) was designed by Maho Hayashi, a Japanese calligraphy designer.

The exterior design is centered on a “floral circle” pattern with plants of the four seasons arranged in a circle, with a “zuikumo” pattern on the upper part and a “running water” pattern on the lower part. The destination indicator is multilingual, and an observation window is newly installed in the curtain plate section.

While the interior is made of wood-like materials, parts of it are made of “Kurama Stone” produced in Kurama Mountain. The stanchion poles are used as hairpins, the suspension straps as hair ornaments, and the seats as obis (sashes). MAI-SPOT,” a free space where passengers can charge their smartphones, will be installed at the end of the train, and a digital signage information display will be installed for the first time on Eizan Electric Railway.

Once in operation, the train will mainly operate between Demachiyanagi Station and Kurama Station. Prior to the start of the service, only one car will be unveiled at Yase-Hieiyamaguchi Station on September 27 from 12:00 to 13:00 (free of charge).
