East Japan Railway Company (JR East) will introduce the E927 class car as a new type of inspection car for the Shinkansen in 2029.
It will be developed simultaneously with the successor to the E6 Series used on the Akita Shinkansen, and will be operated on all JR East Shinkansen lines. The current train (Type E926 “East-i”) has a maximum speed of 275 km/h. By integrating track inspection equipment in one location, the Type E927 will be able to conduct inspections at 320 km/h.
For overhead wire fittings, which are currently inspected visually, monitoring using camera images and AI will be introduced. For wear and position of overhead wires, a high-precision measuring device using both camera images and slit light will be installed.
The exterior design will be selected from among employees of the JR East Group, and the details will be completed by the summer of 2026 under the supervision of tangerin, which is also in charge of the design of the E10.
