On June 2, JICA President Akihiko Tanaka and Special Advisor Shinichi Kitaoka met with Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), at JICA Headquarters.
At the beginning of the meeting, President Tanaka congratulated the UNDRR on the success of the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Reduction Meeting* held in Indonesia from May 23 to 28, and expressed his appreciation for the UNDRR’s efforts to raise awareness of disaster reduction around the world and the steady results it is achieving amidst the world’s increasing threats, including climate change. He expressed his gratitude for the UNDRR’s efforts to raise awareness of disaster risk reduction in countries around the world and the steady results it is achieving.
In response, Special Representative MIZUTORI expressed his appreciation for JICA’s promotion of effective disaster reduction measures based on Japan’s experience as a world leader in disaster reduction, and said that he would like to further deepen the cooperation between the two organizations to accelerate the implementation of disaster reduction measures in each country toward 2030. He also expressed his desire to further deepen cooperation between the two countries in order to accelerate the implementation of disaster prevention measures in each country by 2030.
The participants also exchanged opinions on the disaster risk reduction projects that JICA is implementing in their countries, the effects of which will be further disseminated to the world through the UNDRR, and the fact that island countries such as Oceania are struggling to practice disaster prevention even as they raise their economic level.
Afterwards, Special Advisor Kitaoka and Special Representative Mizutori exchanged views on the importance of mutual cooperation and deepening relations with countries in the region, especially Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, through disaster prevention under the “Western Pacific Alliance” concept proposed by Special Advisor Kitaoka, in light of the recent increasingly complex global situation, and the role of Japan in international fora such as the United Nations. The participants exchanged views on the role of Japan in the international arena, including the United Nations.
