On May 27, JICA Special Advisor Shinichi Kitaoka met with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Mauritius, Pravin Kumar Jagannath, during his visit to the country.
Special Advisor Kitaoka introduced Japan’s response to the stranding and oil spill of the cargo ship WAKASHIO in 2020, the significance of sharing Japan’s modernization experience, and the efforts of the JICA Chair (Support Program for Establishment of Japanese Studies Chair).
In response, Prime Minister Jagannath expressed his gratitude for Japan’s prompt assistance at the time of the stranding and oil spill, the efforts of the JICA chair, and the technical and financial cooperation to date. He also mentioned the start of the African Continental Free Trade Area, and said that an environment is now in place for foreign private companies to enter Africa using Mauritius as a gateway, and expressed his hope for increased private investment from Japan.
