In Brazil, damage from slope disasters such as floods, mudslides, collapses, and landslides has been increasing due to unauthorized land use and urban expansion into areas with high disaster risk associated with recent economic development. To reduce damage, it is important to reduce risk before disaster strikes, and this project follows on from JICA’s efforts to identify landslide risk and strengthen capacity for observation and risk communication through the Strengthening National Strategy for Integrated Natural Disaster Risk Management project (2014-2017), which This project is a follow-up to the previous project, which focused on structures directly related to risk reduction and comprehensively strengthened Brazil’s capacity to deal with landslides by developing technical guidelines and strengthening capacity related to planning, design, construction, and maintenance of countermeasure structures.
