The Bangkok Metropolitan Region, consisting of the Bangkok Special Municipality and five surrounding provinces, is the political and economic center of Thailand, and the Metropolitan Waterworks Corporation operated the water supply system in the Bangkok Special Municipality as well as two surrounding provinces. The maximum water demand in the region was 5.13 million cubic meters/day in 2008, and was expected to reach 6.27 million cubic meters/day by 2017, according to the 2008 forecast. However, the capacity of the water purification facilities in 2010 was 5.52 million cubic meters per day, and there were concerns that supply and demand would tighten and water shortages would occur.
This cooperation strengthened the water purification capacity of the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority in Bangkok, and by upgrading and expanding water intake, transmission, and distribution facilities, as well as water distribution pipelines, the cooperation helped to meet the tight water supply demand in the Bangkok metropolitan area, thereby improving the living environment of residents in the area.
