The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Loan Agreement (L/A) with the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh for two projects totaling up to 165,861 million yen in Dhaka on June 28.
The two projects covered by the yen loan agreements signed this time are as follows.
(1) Dhaka Urban Transportation Improvement Project (North Route 5) (Phase II) (Loan amount: 133,399 million yen)
(2) Southern Chotgram Area Development Project (Loan amount: 32,462 million yen)

(1) Dhaka Urban Transportation Improvement Project (Route 5 North) (Phase II)
Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (Line 5 Northern Route) (II)
(a) Purpose and outline of business
This project aims to meet the transportation demand in the Dhaka metropolitan area and contribute to the economic development and improvement of the urban environment by building an urban railroad (MRT Line 5 North) connecting east and west to form a public transportation network in Dhaka, a capital city facing traffic congestion and environmental degradation due to rapid urbanization and increased traffic volume. This project will contribute to the economic development and improvement of the urban environment.

Southern Chattogram Regional Development Project
(a) Purpose and outline of business
The Southern Chotgram region is undergoing comprehensive development, including critical infrastructure projects, based on the Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Zone concept, and is expected to become a growth driver for Bangladesh in the future, with population growth projected to accompany development.
