The rainy season has suddenly turned into summer, and I find myself missing the sea. I visited “Kannonzaki Park” in the eastern part of the Miura Peninsula. Located on the east side of the Miura Peninsula, it overlooks the Uraga Channel and offers a spectacular view.
I walked around without much prior knowledge of the area, but it seems to have been an important place for protecting Tokyo Bay during the World War II. The ruins of gun emplacements and military facilities can still be seen here and there, and what was supposed to be just a visit to see the lighthouse and the sea turned out to be a trip that made me think about a lot of things.
There are four parking lots near the center of the park that can accommodate a total of 270 vehicles. If you take the train, you can access the park by taking the JR Yokosuka Line to Yokosuka Station and transferring to a bus bound for Kannonzaki.
The park is 70 hectares, which is a very large area to tour in its entirety. This time we toured mainly the lighthouse and gun tower ruins, but there is also the Kannonzaki Nature Museum and Yokosuka Museum of Art in the park, which also has an athletic facility. You can go to any place that suits your taste, and if you participate in events such as historical guided tours, it will make your trip even more enjoyable. Above all, the ocean is beautiful because of its proximity to the open sea! Next time I visit, I would like to invite my friends and have a barbecue while relaxing and watching the ocean.
