JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with UNDP (United Nations Development Program) President Achim Steiner in Tokyo on July 13.
President Tanaka and President Steiner confirmed the significance of the joint communications at the UNDP-JICA Special Forum “Human Security and Africa’s Challenges” hosted by Nikkei on the same day, and exchanged views on further strengthening collaboration between the two organizations to promote human security.
In order to achieve the SDGs in the midst of the recent complex crises, including the global energy and food crises and inflation, President Tanaka spoke about the usefulness of the concept of human security, which views the interconnection of complex threats from the perspective of people. Noting the importance of digital transformation, which can be both a driver and a threat to human security, President Steiner said that UNDP’s cooperation will focus on the use of digital technology and data and the development of ecosystems that ensure security and equality.
President Steiner also expressed his desire to further deepen cooperation with JICA, which is strengthening its efforts to promote private investment to achieve the SDGs, combat climate change, and support the energy transition toward a decarbonized society, and President Tanaka also expressed his hope for stronger cooperation with UNDP.
Both parties also confirmed that they will work closely together at TICAD 8 scheduled to be held in August.
