On Tuesday, August 2, 2022, JICA Iran Office held a workshop on participatory community development (PLSD) by connecting four countries (Iran, Japan, the Philippines, and Tanzania) online as part of the technical training program for the Ministry of Interior of Iran and the Municipal Rural Management Organization (MRMO). More than 60 participants, including government officials from the four countries, actively shared experiences and exchanged opinions on participatory community development (PLSD).
PLSD (Participatory Community Development) through practical examples
In Iran, the Ministry of Interior’s Municipal Rural Management Organization (MRMO) is taking the lead in improving public services in rural municipalities with the participation of local residents, and JICA has been providing technical training in PLSD for MRMO staff since FY2020 in order to share ideas and practices of participatory local development. PLSD is one of the participatory community development methods devised and systematized by Mr. Yutaka Ohama, and has been applied to local government sites in Japan and other countries, with community development projects based on PLSD being implemented in the Philippines and Tanzania. In this workshop, Tanzanian and Filipino government officials presented their experiences of PLSD-based projects to more than 50 Iranian participants, who actively exchanged opinions on how to put the theory into practice.
