From August 8 to 12, 2022, JICA, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), invited the Governor of Borno-Yobe State, the Secretary of the Northeast Development Commission, and 12 others who are leading reconstruction and peacebuilding efforts in the Northeast region to Japan. After paying a courtesy call on the Nigeria-Japan Parliamentarians for Friendship, the delegation traveled to Hiroshima to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Peace Memorial Park to deepen their understanding of Hiroshima’s postwar reconstruction experience and its progress as an international city of peace. In the lecture on postwar reconstruction in Hiroshima, the participants learned about the prewar and postwar situation in Hiroshima and specific efforts to rebuild the city. Hiroshima gave me hope. Hiroshima’s experience gives me hope. The participants also exchanged views with Yuko Tamai, Vice Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, and agreed that the government should play a major role in strengthening ties between Nigeria and Hiroshima and in realizing a peaceful world free of war and conflict.
