KDDI announced on September 29 that au is now available on all sections of the Kurobe Gorge Railway in Toyama Prefecture, allowing passengers to share the spectacular scenery in real time during the autumn foliage season starting in October.
According to the company, five stations were covered by 2018, followed by additional work on the tunnel starting in November 2020. This will be the first time au has enabled communication in the entire section from Unazuki Station, the first station, to Keyakidaira Station, the last station.
The area is designated as a Chubu Mountain National Park, and installation of a base station requires permission from the relevant government ministries and agencies. The area has 41 tunnels, including the longest tunnel of approximately 1 km, which is narrower and more curved than most tunnels, making it difficult for radio waves to reach the inside of the tunnels.
In FY2024, the Kurobe-Unazuki Canyon Route, a new sightseeing route connecting the final stop, Zelkidaira Station, to the Kurobe Dam, is scheduled to be opened to the public.
