The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced that passport renewal procedures will be available via electronic application from March 27, 2023, following the Cabinet approval of the revised Passport Law promulgated in April and its enforcement order on September 30.
The revision of passport laws and regulations was made from the perspective of improving convenience for applicants, increasing the efficiency of passport processing, improving the reliability of passports, and responding to changes in social conditions such as the spread of the new coronavirus.
Under the new system, when a passport is valid for less than one year, it will be possible to apply for renewal (renewal application) electronically, eliminating the need to appear in person at the time of application. In the event that a passport is lost or destroyed, it will also be possible to report the loss online.
In addition, online payment of fees by credit card for electronic applications will be available from some diplomatic establishments abroad in due course, and in the event of a major disaster, passport fees will be reduced or exempted.
