NEXCO Central Japan will conduct a “Road-vehicle Cooperation Demonstration Experiment for the Era of Automated Driving on Expressways” on a section of the New Tomei Expressway (E1A) under construction.
A section of the New Tomei Expressway in Shizuoka Prefecture was used. The project envisions a mix of connected vehicles (vehicles with ICT terminal functions) and unconnected vehicles (vehicles without ICT terminal functions), including self-driving cars, and is also considering the use of road-to-vehicle communication technology to enhance the expressway and create new businesses. The company has been soliciting companies and organizations to participate in this project in advance, and has now reached an agreement with nine companies, including Oki Electric and KDDI, to conduct a demonstration experiment.
There are nine use cases to be tested, including “provision of road obstacle information to following vehicles,” “provision of optimal speed information based on road surface conditions and driving environment,” and “collection and provision of maintenance management information and operation support information using in-vehicle sensors, etc.
