Daido Drinko installed two “I LOVE Deer” vending machines selling deer crackers in the precincts of Kasuga Taisha Shrine.
By allowing sales of deer crackers during unattended hours, the project aims to prevent tourists from giving deer other food than deer crackers. In addition, by designing the containers with educational messages on how to interact with deer, the project aims to create an environment where deer and humans can coexist in harmony.
The vending machine is designed in a color scheme that does not detract from the landscape, and the side of the machine is wrapped with the logo of the Nara Deer Protection Society. In addition to deer crackers, the vending machine sells Nara-related products such as deer antler straps and Bambi leisure charms. A portion of the proceeds from these sales will be used to support the activities of the Nara Deer Protection Society.
