Emergency Relief for Hurricane Lisa in Belize – Delivery of Donated Goods
Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for Hurricane Lisa in Belize have been handed over to the country.
Emergency relief supplies to be provided to Belize arrived at the Philip Goldson International Airport in Belize City on November 16. On the following day, November 17, at 1:30 p.m. (local time) in front of the warehouse of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), Mr. Mai, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Immigration, and Mr. Defar, National Disaster Response Coordinator of NEMO from the Belizean side, and Mr. Iryu Ambassador Kazuhiro Iryu, the Japanese Ambassador to Belize, and JICA Belize Office Director Juichiro Sasaki attended the ceremony.
At the handover ceremony, Undersecretary Mai expressed his deep appreciation for Japan’s prompt assistance and stated that the goods would be used in the severely affected areas, and also expressed his hope to mobilize funds for countries vulnerable to climate change-related disasters, which is being discussed at the COP27 summit meeting in Egypt. Ambassador Iryu also expressed his hope for the mobilization of funds to countries vulnerable to climate change-related disasters, as discussed at the COP27 summit in Egypt. Ambassador Iryu expressed his hope that this emergency assistance will help the affected people from a humanitarian perspective and in view of the friendly relations with Belize, and that it will help the recovery as soon as possible. Mr. Sasaki conveyed a message of continued support to Belize in the areas of climate change and disaster prevention.
The generators, blankets, sleeping pads, etc. provided this time will be promptly delivered to the victims by the government of the country.
The hurricane caused numerous house collapses, flooding, road cuts, power outages, and water outages, mainly in Belize City, affecting 39% of the country’s population of approximately 400,000 people. According to the government of Belize, as of November 6, 172,000 people were affected, 5,000 people were evacuated to shelters, and 5,500 houses were damaged. JICA Belize will continue to work with NEMO on disaster preparedness.
