The Japan Transportation Culture Association and Echizen Railway will install a large stained glass public artwork “Jurassic Echizen” at Fukui Station (next to the ticket gate) of Echizen Railway next spring.
The motifs of the work include dinosaurs excavated in Fukui Prefecture, such as Fukuititan and Fukuiraptor, as well as tourist attractions such as Eiheiji Temple and Tojinbo, the prefecture’s mascot character “Happiryuu,” and the Echizen Railway. The bold composition and rich colors against the vivid sky are said to depict local customs. The work measures approximately 2.8 x 7.1 meters (length x width).
The original was painted over a period of two months by Koji Kinutani, a Western-style painter and recipient of the Order of Culture, who is a master of alfresco painting (the oldest mural painting technique known to mankind). The stained glass artisans at “Creare Atami Yugawara Kobo” in Shizuoka Prefecture are currently working on the stained glass windows based on these original drawings, and the unveiling ceremony is scheduled to be held in March 2023.
