NEXCO 3 companies forecast traffic congestion in GW 2024: 221 uphill trips over 10 km, 1.4 times more than last year; holiday discount not applied.

Posted on 2024-04-23 by Editor in Chief

NEXCO East Japan, NEXCO Central Japan, NEXCO West Japan, JB Honsha and Japan Road Traffic Information Center have announced traffic congestion forecasts for the Golden Week period (April 26 to May 6). They are urging drivers to use the route more sparsely, for example, by changing the days and times of use.

The number of traffic jams is expected to increase to 165 downstream (+26, or about 1.2 times) and 221 upstream (+62, or about 1.4 times) for 10 km or more compared to the actual results in 2023, when there were more traffic jams on the downbound route and on the upbound route on May 3-4 and May 3-5, respectively, and bad weather conditions in various locations.

Traffic congestion is expected to peak at a maximum of 45 km near the Hadano Nakai IC (downhill) on the Tomei Expressway and the Sagami Lake IC (downhill) on the Chuo Expressway, and at a maximum of 40 km near the Hanyu PA (downhill) on the Tohoku Expressway, the Awajishima Chuo SIC (downhill) on the Shin Awamaru Expressway and the Takasaka SA (uphill) on the Kanetsu Expressway.

Please note that the holiday discount will not be applied during this period to ease traffic congestion.
