Koji Inoue’s “Hints for Railway Travel”] Sometimes you can’t get out of the ticket gates? Be careful not to straddle the area with a transportation system IC card.

Posted on 2024-05-072024-05-16 by Editor in Chief

In principle, the use of transportation system IC cards must be completed within an area. For example, a check of Suica’s area on JR East’s website shows that it can be used in the Tokyo metropolitan area, Sendai, Niigata, Morioka, Aomori, and Akita areas. The mutual use of Suica is also applicable to other JR companies and private railway companies that support the nationwide mutual use of Suica. However, use across these areas is not possible. If the areas are far apart from each other, but if the Suica, TOICA, and ICOCA areas are contiguous, as is the case on the Tokaido Main Line, there is a high possibility of “inadvertent crossing of areas”. In addition, JR West’s ICOCA seamlessly covers a wide area with the Sanyo Main Line as its central axis, but with a few exceptions, it is restricted in that it cannot be used beyond 200 km of operating kilometers. For example, if one starts from Osaka and travels westward on the Tokaido and Sanyo Main Lines, the limit is Nishi-Achi, one station beyond Kurashiki. One recent newcomer is the third-sector companies that have converted the Hokuriku Main Line. Here, the combination of “Happi Line Fukui – IR Ishikawa Railway” and “IR Ishikawa Railway – Ainokaze Toyama Railway” can be used through ICOCA, but the combination of “Happi Line Fukui – IR Ishikawa Railway – Ainokaze Toyama Railway” cannot be used through the three companies. In addition, the area of JR West side is limited for the “JR West – Happi-Line Fukui” and “JR West – IR Ishikawa Railway – Ainokaze Toyama Railway”. Some areas can be used while others cannot, so it is important to check in advance. If you cannot use the train through the border station, you need to buy a paper ticket or exit and re-enter at the border station.

Usually, transportation system IC cards can only be used within the area, but there is an exception for Meitetsu. Meitetsu has lines that are outside the manaca area. These are the Hiromi Line between Shinkani and Mitake, and the Gamagori Line (Kirayoshida to Gamagori). Although they are on the same Meitetsu line, it would be unkind to ask passengers to buy a paper ticket only when they cross over the manaca area and the non-manaca area. On the other hand, if the fare is calculated separately at bordering stations, it will be more expensive due to the double addition of the first-ride fare. Therefore, when you use a transportation system IC card to go in and out of the manaca area, you must enter and exit at the intermediate ticket gates at the bordering stations (Shinkani and Kirayoshida). The procedure is as follows. When boarding a train from a station outside the manaca area, take a boarding station certificate from the ticket vending machine or issuing machine at the boarding station. Present it at the intermediate ticket gate at Shinkani or Kirayoshida, and have the entry record attached to your transportation system IC card. Use the IC card when you enter the station. When you go from a station in the manaca area to a station outside the manaca area, report the station where you get off at the intermediate ticket gate at Shinkani or Kirayoshida and have your entry recorded on the IC card (the fare to the station where you get off is deducted at this point). At that time, you will be given an IC card settlement slip, which you hand to the train crew when you get off the train. In this way, the fare is calculated both inside and outside the manaca area.
