Grant Aid Agreement Signed for Bhutan: Grant Aid Contributes to Facilitating Logistics and Human Mobility and Improving Access to Social Services by Improving Bridges on Trunk Roads | News & Media

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Royal Government of Bhutan on May 20 in Thimphu, the capital of the Kingdom of Bhutan, for a grant of up to 1,634 million yen for “the Bridge Replacement Project for the First Main National Highway in Mongar District. The agreement was concluded between the two companies.

Most of Bhutan is a rugged mountainous country, and there is no alternative trunk road for the main national highway No. 1 that crosses the country from east to west. In order to smoothly transport goods in peacetime and patients during emergency medical care, it is important to improve and strengthen the route, including bridges.

The Namling and Dhadari bridges on National Highway No. 1 in Mongar District, eastern Bhutan, have fallen in the past and are now temporary bridges that need to be replaced immediately. However, these two bridges are located in a steep mountainous area, and the construction of permanent bridges requires advanced technology and a wealth of experience due to the topographical conditions.
