Yamanashi Prefecture announced that the Mt. Fuji Yoshida-guchi climbing route closed for the summer season of 2024 on September 10, 2012.
This season (July 1-September 10), the first mountaineering restrictions in Japan will be introduced to ease trail congestion and prevent bullet climbing. The following measures were implemented: an entrance fee of 2,000 yen and a voluntary conservation cooperation fee of 1,000 yen were collected, climbing gates were set up (open at 3:00 am and closed at 4:00 pm), and the number of climbers per day (excluding those with reservations at mountain lodges) was limited to 4,000 people.
According to Fujiyoshida City, the number of climbers was 125,287 (down 18% from 2023), and the number of nighttime climbers was 708 (down 95.1% from 2023). In addition, according to preliminary figures from Yamanashi Prefecture, the number of climbers per day did not exceed 4,000 on any day, and the number of first aid consultations for injuries and walking difficulties was 27 (a decrease of 41.3% from 2023).
The nuisance behavior observed in 2023, such as foreign climbers taking a nap on the trail and staying in front of mountain huts, was observed in some areas at the beginning of the season, but as a result of requests for cooperation from embassies and other measures, it has been virtually non-existent since mid-July.
Yamanashi Prefecture has identified future issues, such as dealing with “rush climbers” who pass through the gate just before the 4:00 p.m. start of the regulation to reach the summit without staying at a lodge, and lightly dressed climbers, as well as the implementation of unified regulations with Shizuoka Prefecture.
