JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing regional revitalization initiatives (currently the “JAL Furusato Project”), and in August 2020 launched the “JAL Furusato Ambassadors,” cabin crew members selected through an in-house recruitment process who move to the area to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, JAL appointed “JAL Hometown Cheering Troops” who are involved in regional revitalization while serving on board. The aim is to develop products and solve regional issues for hometowns and other regions with which they have connections, utilizing the knowledge they have accumulated as flight attendants.
We spoke with Sayaka Matsubara, a JAL Furusato Ambassador who is involved in the JAPAN Apple Lemonade non-alcoholic cocktail at the Chubu Branch Office.
–What can you tell us about your initiatives?
Hello, I am Matsubara, JAL Furusato Ambassador for the Chubu region. Since April this year, I have been based in Nagoya with the hope of introducing the charms of my hometown Mie Prefecture and the Chubu region to as many people as possible.
The hotel “Nikko Style Nagoya” has started offering original non-alcoholic cocktails made with “JAPAN Apple Lemonade” in October. We would like to introduce this initiative.
Have you heard about “JAL Hometown Project Products”? JAL Hometown Project Products are products jointly developed with local companies to promote the attractiveness of the region.
JAPAN Apple Lemonade is another JAL Furusato Project product. In 2022, we worked with Frohnal, a beverage manufacturer in Ise City, to develop this product in order to introduce more people to the delicious taste of Mie Prefecture’s fruit.
This syrup is made from lemons from Minami Ise Town, which are characterized by their refreshing acidity, and apples from Nagano Prefecture, which are sweet and contain a lot of juice. Please enjoy it with soda water, brandy, tea, etc.
The JAPAN Apple Lemonade was used to create an original non-alcoholic cocktail, the “Amber Mojito”.
Iced tea (an original blend from Germany’s finest tea maker, Ronnefeldt) and soda, garnished with mint and lemon for flavor.
The refreshing aroma of mint and the sweetness of apples are perfectly balanced, and the drink is very tasty both on its own and with a meal. As the name suggests, the Amber cocktail is also pleasing to the eye.
–How are you involved in this effort?
We wanted more people to enjoy JAPAN Apple Lemonade, so we proposed that it be offered as one of the drink menu items at the restaurant “style kichen” in Nikko Style Nagoya, and it became a reality.
style kichen offers food and beverages that focus on local ingredients, and they agreed with our desire to promote the appeal of JAPAN Apple Lemonade, produced in Mie Prefecture, and created an original cocktail.
–What are your future plans and prospects?
We are also planning to serve the second JAPAN Apple Lemonade hot cocktail, which can be enjoyed in the coming colder season.
This time we had the opportunity to have the charms of Mie and Nagano prefectures wonderfully expressed in a cocktail. We would like to continue to be actively involved in proposing events and projects that will allow people to experience the gastronomy and charm of the Chubu region.
–What is your message to travelers?
Nikko Style Nagoya opened in 2020 as “the one and only hotel focusing on coffee and music.
Coffee is provided by an original blend developed for the hotel by TRUNK COFFEE, a local coffee roaster in Nagoya.
TRUNK COFFEE is a very popular coffee specialty store that uses the highest quality green coffee beans, “specialty coffee,” which is said to account for only 5% of all coffee beans in the world.
Nikko Style Nagoya has introduced the POURSTEADY, a fully automatic coffee drip machine designed by a former NASA engineer. This machine reproduces the same authentic coffee taste as a barista, with the amount of hot water required to brew aromatic coffee, steeping time, and pouring method always at their best.
Since coming to Nagoya, I have become a big fan of their coffee and buy their beans to make coffee at home.
The music is also specially created for Nikko Style Nagoya, and the background music will soothe you with pleasant music as soon as you enter the lobby.
